"A chance 'to see American generosity.

Jakarta - With international television broadcasts repeatedly showing the American military delivering supplies to victims of the catastrophic tsunami, Secretary of State Colin Powell candidly acknowledged Tuesday night the hope that such aid might improve the United States' image in the Muslim world.

Addressing reporters along with Indonesia's foreign minister, Hassan Wirojuda, Powell said that American aid matched the scale of the catastrophe, particularly in Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim nation and the home of two-thirds of the 150,000 people who perished.

But noting that most of the victims were Muslims, he pointedly elaborated on the American aid effort.

"We'd be doing it regardless of religion," Powell said. "But I think it does give the Muslim world and the rest of the world an opportunity to see American generosity, American values in action - that we care about every individual and the dignity of every individual" as well as "the needs of every individual, regardless of faith."... Esta última frase, foi bonita. Quase que me tirava uma lágrima! Em vez disso desatei a rir!

"Washington - Congress expects a new White House request for as much as $100 billion this year for war and related costs in Iraq and Afghanistan, congressional officials say.

It would be the third and largest Iraq-related request from the White House yet, and could push the cost of the Iraq war over $200 billion - far above the initial White House estimates of $50 billion-$60 billion. So far, the Iraq war has cost about $130 billion, according to the White House's Office of Management and Budget."

Eu acho que esta notícia, também "give the Muslim world and the rest of the world an opportunity to see American generosity, American values in action - that we care about every individual and the dignity of every individual"
